Your Adoption Questions Answered

At Alexander | Grossman, we are a trusted resource for legal knowledge concerning the adoption process in Illinois. Our clients come to us excited about adopting a child, but with questions that need to be answered. Following are some of the most frequently asked questions about adoption in Illinois.

Who Can Adopt?

Almost anyone can adopt, regardless of age, marital status, income or sexual orientation. You must be able to demonstrate that you are financially stable and emotionally prepared to take on the responsibilities of parenthood. In Illinois, you must not have a legal disability and you must have a good reputation in the community. You must have lived in Illinois for at least six months (90 days if you are in the military). Certain agencies, faith-based organizations and foreign countries have specific requirements.

What Is A Home Study?

A case study is an in-depth screening process conducted by an adoption agency. Home studies typically entail questionnaires, interviews, home visits, and background and reference checks.

How Long Does The Adoption Process Take?

The process can take months or years, depending upon a number of factors, including:

  • What type of adoption (agency, stepparent, etc.)
  • Whether or not a home study is required
  • The length of time it takes to identify a child

You can cut down on unnecessary delays by working with an experienced adoption attorney.

How Much Does Adoption Cost?

Again, it depends upon the type of adoption. Foster parent and stepparent adoptions may cost a couple thousand dollars while agency and infant adoptions may run in the tens of thousands of dollars. Hiring an attorney to help with your adoption is optional, but may actually save you money in the long run by eliminating errors and oversights in the process.
